Current Projects

We are currently involved in two NSF-funded projects. Miller and Gibler are finishing an issues-based data collection (NSF#1729300), that collects information on all issues of contention in confrontations from 1816 to 2014. Three levels of data are being collected: overall issue data, issue changes data over time, and demands made over each issue. This data is intended to be used in connection with the MIC events data to better understand international bargaining through conflict.

The second ongoing project, headed by Jessica Maves Braithwaite, Miller, and Gibler (NSF#2116678), is collecting data on rebels, paramilitaries, militias, and similar non-state actors involved in confrontations. Many confrontations are not actually state-to-state. For example, the longest confrontation in the dataset is between Israel and Lebanon (MIC#4182) and has events data that predominantly describes Israel constantly attacking Lebanon for almost 20 years. Missing from this description is that Israel is actually attacking and responding to non-state actors in Lebanon. This project will provide events data similar to the MIE dataset but for non-state actors involved in confrontations.

Those interested are encouraged to reach out to the principal investigators for additional information.
